Thanksgiving Is Going to the Dogs

What do carrots, turkey, sweet potatoes and apples have in common? They’re all staples of an American Thanksgiving. But they’re also perfect ingredients for home-made doggy treats.

cookiesSo, tomorrow, plunk the guests in front of the football game and take a few minutes to turn the ingredients you’ve already got in the kitchen into special morsels for – let’s be honest – the real critters for which you’re thankful!

Yummy Turkey and Carrot "Cookies"

2 lbs. of leftover turkey ground or chopped very fine (no skin, no bones)

2 eggs

2 cups cooked rice

8 oz. peas

3 carrots shredded

1 apple, diced

In mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients and mix well. On a baking sheet, drop the batter into small round biscuits or form larger squares you can cut up later. You could get fancy and use a cookie cutter with a bone shape, too. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. Let cool before serving.

Yummy Turkey and Cheese Treats

2 cups chopped cooked turkey (no skin, no bones)

2 tablespoons grated cheese

2 tablespoons of peas (optional)

2 eggs

2 cups wheat flour

2 tablespoons brewer's yeast (optional)

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Combine turkey, cheese and peas and mix well. Beat the eggs in a separate bowl and then pour them over turkey mixture. Add the flour, yeast and oil. Stir until thoroughly mixed. Drop as small lumps onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Cook in a 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes, until brown and firm.

PBP (Peanut Butter and Pumpkin) Treats

1 15-ounce can of pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling!)

2 eggs

1/2 cup oats

3 cups flour

3 tablespoon of peanut butter

Stir together the flour and oats. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, pumpkin and peanut butter. Stir wet ingredients into dry. Pour onto a floured surface and roll dough out to ½” thick. Cut out using cookie cutter. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes at 350 until golden brown.

Sweet Potato Dog Goodies

1 cup of canned sweet potato or leftover sweet potato removed from the skin and mashed

1 3/4 cups flour

1 egg (beaten)

2 tablespoons peas (optional)

Stir ingredients together in a large bowl until dough forms. Roll dough into small balls and place on a cookie sheet. Press dough down slightly so the biscuits are about 1/4 inch thick. Bake at 350 until golden brown.

A is for Apple Dog Treats

2 1/2 cups flour

1/2 cup cornmeal

1 finely chopped or grated apple

1 beaten egg

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional)

1/2 cup cold water

Blend flour and cornmeal in large mixing bowl, add apple, egg, oil, brown sugar and water until well blended. Roll the mixture out on a floured surface until it’s about an inch thick. Cut into shapes and place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 35 minutes. Then, turn oven off and leave cookies inside for another 30-45 minutes until crisp.
