Happy Belated Birthday Wishes to the Afghan Mix Puppies

Yes, time flies and the darling Afghan/Ibizan hound puppies from Colorado had their first birthday last week. (Oops, we sort of missed it). But the pupsters’ families didn’t. They did lot of celebrating. And were kind enough to give us some updates.

That's Murphy on the left and Alex on the right, we think.
That's Murphy on the left and Alex on the right, we think.

About Alex -- Alex is a happy, lovable and sweet boy. He has matured a lot since the last update and became a big boy. He loves my daughter and he likes to spend a lot of time with her. Alex and Bernie (a greyhound) are great buddies. They play and wrestle all day long together. Alex loves to spend a lot of time outside on his new run. He runs up and down and chases squirrels and small birds. Although he matured a lot he still has a little mischievous side to him. He loves to steal our socks from the laundry basket and runs with them all around the house. We love our little guy. He definitely brings a lot of joy into our lives.

About Murphy -- Everyone loves Murphy, although his “brothers” are a little annoyed because he gets a lot of attention. He is fully potty trained and uses a bell to let us know when he needs to go out. He sleeps in his crate at night, after some night-time snuggling. During the day, he’s good in his crate and happy to see the daily dog walker, who tires him out sufficiently so he sleeps until we get home from work. He is trusted (for the most part) and has the run of the house although he sometimes finds a sock or some underwear and runs around the house with it. He completed basic puppy obedience class and will start agility in the fall. Murphy and Alex get together for playdates a few times a month. And celebrated their first birthday together!

Bumper
Bumper

About Bumper – Bumper has come a looooong way. He was a TERROR when he arrived! Couldn't snuggle him or pick him up - almost like a feral cat! He's still not very snuggly, except when he's sleeping. He loves to snuggle when he sleeps. He loves his daily outings at the dog park. He loves to play with other dogs, and chasing and being chased. He's getting less clumsy as he grows into his long legs and big feet. He's not shy, but he is timid. He is very vocal. He barks at his sister Penny if she won't trade bones with him and if that doesn’t work, he’ll poke me with his nose as to say "mom, Penny won't give me her bone!" He has a beard  and his face is getting "fuzzy!" He's a lot of fun and I wouldn't trade him for the world!

Alma
Alma

About Alma -- Little Alma isn't really so little anymore. She weighs in at 41 pounds and is just as tall as her greyhound sister. She graduated from the Old Towne School for Dogs Intensive Day School program. Alma is now a master of walking on her lead and is complimented by her unique look everywhere we go! She is fully crate-trained and bell-trained (so thankful for the other pup's parent's tips and tricks). However, Alma still enjoys the taste of her dad's shoes, and we still love to call her Almageddon. She loves her siblings, and she is an absolute goofball! We love her!

Vivian (and best buddy)
Vivian (and best buddy)

About Vivian – Vivian has relocated to Tampa, Fla., and become quite the beach bum! She even goes out with us on the boat and loves to swim! When she's not at the dog beach, she and her brother are at doggie daycare playing in the pup pool. She is extremely attached to her brother Barrett (a redbone coonhound). She loves to lay on him, wrestle, and follows him everywhere.  To burn some of her puppy energy, Vivian, Barrett and I enjoy running along Bayshore Blvd - the longest continuous sidewalk in the U.S. Judging from the pictures of Vivian's siblings, she seems to be the only pup from the litter to have short smooth hair- she sure is a cutie!

Stella
Stella

Scarlett – now Stella -- she was the last of the litter to be come to SHUG. She was a spectacular foster fail. From her mother, in honor of her first birthday: I remember getting the call to pick up a puppy mix in Chicago. “Sure. I'll go. It'll be fun.” Little did we know what kind of hot mess she would be! And by “hot mess” I mean a HUGE FREAKING HOT MESS. She was covered and matted in her own bodily functions and was a skeleton draped with fur. Starved to death, she was climbing all over me to get to the dog food sitting on the front seat. I brought her home and tossed her in the tub. I fed her and loved her and made her feel safe. My husband was mad as hell at me for bringing this eating, pooping, peeing machine into the house. She ate shoes. She ate the couch. She ate the chair. She ate a huge hole in the middle of the living room rug. She ate shoes. She shredded dog beds and blankets and toys. She chewed on my three greyhounds like they were squeaky toys. And she had potty training and extreme crate anxiety issues. I never intended to fall head over heels for this little bearded lady. But here we are. Happy birthday to my dear little bearded one. I love her to the moon and back.
