FAQs

Q?

Which airlines fly dogs?

A.

From Spain, SHUG uses American, Iberia, or Europa. From the Middle East we use KLM and from Korea we use KLM or United. Domestically, SHUG uses American or United. Flights on American require a ticketed human passenger and are $175. Dogs do not need a companion to fly on United but the cost is based on weight. The average Galgo is $400-500 on United to anywhere in the US or Canada and availability is based on the size of the plane. Aircraft large enough to accommodate an adult dog generally only fly into major airports in the US. So although we can fly your dog to you, you may have to drive several hours to an airport large enough to receive them.

Q?

Do I have to pick up my dog?

A.

While we prefer that all adopters personally pick up their new dog from his or her foster home, we know that isn't always realistic. In some cases we can ask for volunteers to help drive dogs to meet their adopters, but in many cases the best option for the dog is to fly them to their forever home. The cost to fly a dog is $200-500 and we can usually provide a crate for your dog to fly.

Q?

What does the adoption fee cover?

A.

A dog's adoption fee covers their transport to SHUG, spay or neuter, rabies and distemper vaccinations, and a health check by a veterinarian. The adoption fee also includes any procedures recommended by the veterinarian, such as blood work, dental cleanings or extractions, tumor removals, etc. Although the dog's transport to their SHUG foster home is included in the adoption fee, it does NOT include any expenses to get them to their forever home. If you can't pick up your dog, we may be able to fly it to you but that would be an additional expense and can be $200-500.
