Charles has a bite history.

Now that we've got that out of the way, Charles is a large Borzoi, about 100lbs, and 5 years old. He's very sweet and affectionate and friendly with people and other dogs in new situations. He does, however, have a strong startle response. He has snapped at people when they've surprised him and while there were no major injuries, we are looking for experienced adopters who can continue to work with Charles to keep him and everyone around him safe. When little dogs are nippy people think it's cute. When a 100lb dog is nippy, it can get them into major trouble.

Charles is fostered in NY state and his new home needs to be within driving distance. Even without COVID, we prefer not to fly the larger dogs.

Charles' adoption fee is $300.

NOTE: If Charles is still listed as available, then he is still available. We are a 100% volunteer organization and most of us have regular "day jobs". Please do not email or call to ask if he's still available, that's super annoying!

  1. Retired racing greyhounds are pretty notorious for “sleep startle.” Adopters are wisely trained not to touch their greyhounds while they are sleeping, and warned that sometimes they sleep with their eyes at least partially open. Our first greyhound had sleep startle and on more than one occasion I got teeth on my skin quite suddenly when I mistook her for being awake and stroked her fur. I believe that comes from spending so much time sleeping solo in crates at the track, where they are not bumped or jostled by other dogs or handlers. I wonder if Charles might have this sleep startle tendency and if that might be the reason he reactively snapped when surprised in the past. If that is the case, then his “bite history” is of no real concern, and his new family just needs to be absolutely certain he is awake and alert before touching him.
